The event I chose for my poem is the hydraulic system that the Sinu culture created. The inland
delta formed by the San Jorge river, the Cauca river, the Magdalena river and the Nechi river, frequently
flooded during the rainy season in the mountains from April to November causing a lot of problems to the
Sinu culture. This poem is told from the perspective of a resident that lived there. I chose to tell it from
this perspective because I wanted to show how the residents felt about this problem and how did they
solve them. This event is important to Colombian history because it helped control the floods and this
system is used in the present. For this poem the poetic form that I used was terza rima.
"Solution for a big issue by Sinu Culture"
The clouds paint the blue sky
The months from April to November had finally arrived
The rivers increase as time flies by.
The water stream passes through all the place around
Dressing all the crops with mud
Killing every single plant above the ground.
It was a flood.
Our economy fell, we were on top and suddenly drop into the hole
The houses were completely destroyed like a soldier in war covered in blood.
With no place to go and everything gone,
We created a way of living without the deluge;
We dug 3-meter-deep canals with tools, that we have done.
The water passing through them as delicately as a person walking quietly on tiptoes
The canals were deep and huge
Leaving the crops and houses without damage.
