Poem

Manuela Gutierrez

          My topic for the poem is the independence of Colombia, which was between 1500 to 1999.

My poem is told from the perspective of a Spanish soldier losing everything they had conquered when

the natives rebelled against them. This event is important to the Colombian citizens because it gave

freedom to the whole country and they set us free from the Spanish kingdom. My poem is written in a

quatrain form and it ends in a rhyming couplet.

“Take Care of the Things You Have”

Oh, the beautiful lands we have found;

 The naive people filled with gold,

 There was food all around,

Everything looked so old.

 It was all beautiful until they weren't naive anymore;

 All lost to war

A stolen store

Nothing left to adore.

Everyone running non stop

 A bullet running through several hearts,

 Making them go on complete stops

Destroying the beautiful arts

 Injured people in every corner like words in a story

 All hoping for their lives, remembering the things that make them sorry.
