Poem

Pablo Salazar

This poem is written about the Spanish Inquisition, and it's about a man who lives in the inquisition time and experiences everything. This event is really important to Colombia and its citizens because this period of time was when the Spanish came to rule Colombia and overpower them. I chose to use the style of rhyming couplets so everything could work perfectly.

"The Violence of My Country"

In the time the Spanish ruled,

There was a period called the inquisition, the police’s heads never cooled.

It was all about religion.

Being Christian was a condition.

Denial was death.

By blood, violence, and gasping for your last breath.

Denial was torture.

It was put upon the land that was foreign.

Denial was suffering.

In a dark room you were forced to starve, you were fed nothing.

Denial was pain.

As the guards drowned your face in boiling water, as you felt your cooking brain.

The inquisition was caution.

Because religion was enforced by the crown’s actions.
