Poem

Pascualtobias Rendon

The event I chose for my poem is the ritual of the Muiscas. The poem is narrated by a young boy from the tribe, I chose this perspective because I wanted the people to know how important this ritual is. The ritual was made to choose a new cacique (leader/chief) to rule the tribe. The Balsa del Dorado was the boat used on the ritual, this boat is so important that it is in a museum, this ritual was very known in Colombia. The poetic form I used in my poem were rhyming couplets.

"The Muiscas Poem"

Far, deep in the country.

In the big plains filled with mystery

The Muiscas ruled,

And built trading centers that retooled.

Salt, plants and meat they sold,

And were things they traded for gold.

Gold was many, it was abundant.

And for them it was important.

The Cacique had to go through a ritual.

That was not so habitual.

Six long years he had to spend in a cave,

With no company more than himself.

From beautiful women he couldn't be tempted.

And in the big boat he entered.

The boat had gold and wood,

And in the middle he stood.

The Ruler was covered in fine, shimmering, gold dust

And gained everyone's trust.

He threw himself onto the lake.

And the gold dust went away.

And when he came out, to take a breath

He ruled the tribe until his death.
