Poem

Maria Jose Cadavid

ā€œThere needs to be a lot more emphasis on what a child can do instead of what he cannot doā€. This quote from Dr. Temple Grandin really grabbed my attention because it says that we always see the negative side of everyone, especially autists. This poem is inspired on sesame street's new character; Julia, she's an autistic girl. The idea of this project is that kids learn about this disorder. The perspective of this poem, as you can see, is from an autistic kid that is telling a story about his/her life. This event is really important in the world because this way kids can learn that being autistic is very difficult for them and their families. I chose to write my poem in a quatrain.

ā€œA life around autismā€

Life hits me.

Harder than to anybody else.

I wish I could be all neat,

And not fall onto my own feet.

I feel like I can see the light,

Even in the darkest nights,

Although people don't realize,

There is something more than ugly eyes.

It's hard, how I can't control myself,

I can't grab a book from the top shelves,

But the worst parts are the bullies’ gunshots,

that drown in my puddles of tears and fear.

I lay inside my little bubble,

the only place I'm safe from the struggle,

the only way I'm safe and sound,

of the danger that flies around

like butterflies in an open yard.
